Driving on holiday can be a stressful experience. For many of us, taking our cars abroad involves our first experience of driving on the right. You don’t need the additional stress of worrying about other aspects of driving abroad. While all the countries of Europe have their own road rules and traditions, there are a few general tips which are accurate over most of Europe.

Insurance

Your regular car insurance probably covers you third party in the EU. However, it is worth making sure. Check with your insurer for exactly how covered you are. Most insurers will allow you to expand your coverage for the duration of your trip for a fee. It is often cheaper to add European insurance when you take out the policy, as opposed to just before you go driving on holiday.

Breakdown

You don’t need to have special breakdown cover to drive abroad. Indeed, many UK breakdown cover providers offer European breakdown cover as part of their standard policy. If your cover does not include Europe, you may be able to add this on as an extra. This should likely cost you no more that £50 – so consider a standalone policy if you are quoted more than this.

Must Takes

There are certain requirements to driving on holiday that you might not realise. You need to have your V5 document with you – this is the certificate of ownership of your car. You also need to have a GB sticker on your car, as well as a red warning triangle in case of breakdown. Some countries have specific requirements too – such as France which requires you to have a breathalyser in your car.

Tolls

Toll Roads are much more common in Europe than in the UK. It is worth doing enough research before travelling how toll roads work in your destination. France and Spain in particular have a great many toll roads. These are often quite expensive, although paying for them can be made easier with automatic tags. Some countries also use cameras that recognise your number plate rather than having payment booths.
