Modern cars provide you with a great deal of information. Infotainment systems are capable of giving you information about your car’s performance, your surroundings and your in-car entertainment. All this information can get a little overwhelming – especially when you are trying to drive. However, there are other ways of getting across all this information to drivers without them having to look away from the road. Could talking cars be the answer?

Talk, Signal, Manoeuvre

Apple has started work on new software to answer this need. New patents have been filed that suggest the company is working on technology which informs passengers in an autonomous car that the vehicle is about to make a manoeuvre. This is with the intent of making passengers feel more comfortable when riding in an autonomous car. Evidence suggests that many people are not comfortable with the idea of being in a car that drives itself. However, Apple hopes that this technology will make people feel better, if they know what is going to happen.

Information Super Highway

This technology is not only applicable to autonomous vehicles. Talking cars could stand to revolutionise how we receive information on our journeys. By allowing drivers to focus entirely on the road, rather than looking away at screens, talking cars could improve driver safety significantly. Distracted driving is said to be responsible for many thousands of deaths a year. According to US statistics, there were 3,450 deaths from distracted driving in 2016. Reducing the amount of time drivers need to look away from the road could reduce statistics such as these significantly.

Until we have talking cars, we will still have to be in charge of our own vehicles. This means that we have a duty of care to look after them. Unfortunately, accidents still happen no matter how careful we are. If your car is written off in an accident, or stolen, your insurers might not pay you what you paid for your car.
