There are certain things that you need to keep in your car over winter. After all, winter has its own challenges and difficulties to face. The likelihood is that nothing bad will happen to you while driving over winter. However, you should try and be prepared. If you prepare for every eventuality, you have the best chance of being safe and secure if you anything happens over winter.
Ice Scraper
The best way to keep your windscreen clear is with an ice scraper. It is a legal requirement that you keep your front and rear windscreen clear of snow and ice. You should keep an ice-scraper in your car in case ice forms on the windscreens while you aren’t using the car. Chemical De-Icer can also be useful if you are in a rush to clear your car.
Torch
Winter is dark – that hardly seems worth mentioning – but not enough of us seem aware of it. Make sure that you have the means to produce some light if you have an accident. Keeping a torch in your car makes it easier if you have to look under your bonnet in the dark – or if you need to examine any part of your car.
Warm Blanket
Even if you feel more comfortable driving without a warm coat on, you should still keep something warm in the car. If you have an accident in winter, you need to be able to keep yourself warm. A long wait with no heating could leave you in some discomfort. Make sure you have at least a warm blanket left in your car through winter.
High-Vis Clothing
In some countries, it is a legal requirement to keep a high-visibility jacket in your car. While that is not the case in the UK, it is still a good idea. Because of the lower-visibility conditions in winter, a high-vis jacket makes it easier for you to be seen if you need to wait outside your vehicle.
Shovel
Your car can easily get stuck in deep snow. This is especially true if the snow forms when you are not using your car. A snow shovel is a sensible precaution against the build-up of snow. You could even get a foldable version to keep in your boot if you have limited space.
Winter comes with unexpected surprises. If something happens to write off your car, you could lose out on the value of your car. Get GAP Insurance, and make sure that you get back the full value of your vehicle.
